Iowa's Premier Backyard Backyard Sports Center Builder
Landforms Design Inc, led by owner Darin Chamberlin with over 42 years of horticultural and construction expertise, has become the region's most trusted name in backyard athletic court construction. With more than 300 courts built across Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, North Liberty, Marion, and communities throughout the USA, we bring unmatched experience to every project — from a single backyard pickleball court to a full multi-sport complex.
Our specialty in Backyard Sports Center construction isn't accidental. Darin Chamberlin recognized early on that homeowners wanted more than beautiful landscapes — they wanted functional outdoor spaces where families could play, compete, and stay active year-round. From that vision, Landforms Design became the go-to contractor for outdoor athletic courts across the USA, building a reputation one court at a time.
Every court we build starts with a thorough site evaluation, professional grading, and a drainage plan engineered for Iowa's demanding climate. We don't cut corners on the foundation — because a great-looking court that fails in year two is no court at all. Our courts are built to perform for decades.
Pickleball Courts
The fastest-growing sport in America — and we've built more pickleball courts in the region than any other contractor. Regulation 20'×44' dimensions, professional surface coating, net posts included.
Tennis Courts
Full-size or shorter "mini" tennis courts for all skill levels. Hard surface with acrylic color coating, line striping, net system, and fencing options to match your property.
Basketball Courts
Half-court and full-court options for residential and commercial properties. Adjustable or fixed hoop systems, color court coating, and line striping for regulation play.
Why Professional Court Construction Matters in Iowa
Iowa's climate is one of the most demanding in the country for outdoor surfaces. Freeze-thaw cycles through our long winters cause tremendous stress on improperly built courts — cracking, heaving, and surface deterioration are common when construction shortcuts are taken. Our courts are engineered from the ground up to handle Iowa winters and emerge each spring looking and playing exactly as they should.
Proper subbase preparation is the single most important factor in court longevity. We excavate to the correct depth, install appropriate base material compacted in layers, and ensure drainage moves water away from the court surface — not underneath it where it can freeze and cause damage. This process, done right, is what separates a court that lasts 30 years from one that needs replacement in five.
- Full site excavation and grade engineering for positive drainage
- Compacted aggregate base installed in proper lifts
- Asphalt or concrete playing surface options
- Acrylic resurfacing and color coating in your choice of colors
- Professional line striping to regulation dimensions
- Net post installation with sleeve anchors
- Fencing, lighting, and windscreen options available
- Multi-sport line configurations (pickleball + basketball on one court)
Multi-Sport Court Options
One of the most popular requests we receive is multi-sport court configuration — fitting two or more sports onto a single court surface. A common example is a full pickleball court with basketball overlaid, or two pickleball courts within a tennis court footprint. Multi-sport striping allows families to enjoy multiple games without needing multiple court installations, maximizing the value of the investment.
We design multi-sport layouts carefully so that lines from different sports are clearly distinguishable — typically using different colors for each sport's striping — so players always know which lines apply to their game. This takes planning and precision, and it's something we've done on dozens of courts across the USA.
The Landforms Court-Build Process
Every court project begins with a free on-site estimate from Darin Chamberlin personally. He evaluates the terrain, discusses your sport preferences and budget, and walks you through the full process from site prep to final surface coat. Here's what to expect:
- Site Evaluation: We assess grade, drainage, soil type, and access — and use drone aerial survey where helpful to capture the full picture
- Design & Layout: You review the court dimensions, orientation, and color options before any work begins
- Excavation & Grading: We cut and fill to achieve the proper slope (typically 1% grade minimum for drainage) and establish a stable subbase
- Base Installation: Compacted gravel base installed in layers to the specified depth for your surface type
- Surface Paving: Asphalt or concrete installed and allowed to cure properly before any coating
- Acrylic Coating & Color: Professional acrylic resurfacing applied in your chosen colors — green, blue, red, or custom
- Striping & Hardware: Regulation lines applied, net posts set, and any fencing or accessories installed
- Final Walkthrough: Darin reviews the finished court with you personally before the job is closed
Surface Material Choices
We offer both asphalt and concrete as base court surfaces, each with distinct advantages. Asphalt is typically more cost-effective and provides some flex that's easier on joints during extended play — a popular choice for recreational courts. Concrete offers superior longevity and dimensional stability, making it the preferred surface for serious players or facilities expecting heavy use.
Both surfaces receive a professional acrylic coating system that provides color, texture, and UV protection. The acrylic coating also fills minor surface irregularities and gives the court its characteristic "cushioned" feel compared to raw pavement. Coatings are available in dozens of colors and are designed to resist fading, peeling, and wear from Iowa's weather extremes.

Fencing, Lighting & Accessories
A complete backyard court is more than just the playing surface. We help clients choose and install chain-link or vinyl-coated fencing to contain balls and define the court area. We also coordinate with lighting installers to ensure your court is playable into the evening — a must for families who want to maximize use of their investment. Net systems, ball hoppers, benches, and storage solutions can all be incorporated into the project plan.
Serving Clients Across the USA
Landforms Design has built Backyard Sports Center™ courts throughout Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha, Iowa City, North Liberty, Solon, Ely, Mt. Vernon, Robins, and communities across the region. We've also completed projects statewide — Darin Chamberlin's reputation as a traveling landscaper and court builder extends throughout Iowa and beyond. Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to build a backyard Backyard Sports Center?
Most residential court projects take between 5–10 business days from excavation to final striping, depending on court size, surface type, and weather. Concrete courts require additional cure time (typically 28 days) before the acrylic coating can be applied. We'll give you a detailed timeline during your estimate.
How much does a backyard pickleball or basketball court cost?
Court costs vary significantly based on size, surface material, accessories, and site conditions. A basic single pickleball court on asphalt typically starts around $15,000–$25,000. Multi-sport courts, concrete surfaces, lighting, and fencing add to the investment. We provide detailed, itemized estimates at no charge — contact us to schedule your free site visit.
Can you build a court on a sloped yard?
Yes — in fact, almost every residential court we build involves some degree of grading work. We regularly build on sloped and uneven terrain throughout the region using cut-and-fill grading, retaining walls, and proper drainage engineering. Challenging terrain is something we handle routinely. A drone survey helps us plan the grading precisely before any excavation begins.
Can one court surface be used for multiple sports?
Absolutely — multi-sport courts are one of our specialties. We regularly stripe courts for two or three sports using different line colors to keep each game's boundaries clear. Pickleball + basketball is the most popular combination, but we also do pickleball + tennis, and full multi-sport configurations. During your design consultation, we'll show you layout options that fit your available space.
How do I maintain my court to keep it looking great?
Acrylic-coated courts are low maintenance compared to other outdoor surfaces. Annual cleaning with a pressure washer removes dirt and organic debris. Inspect the surface and cracks each spring after winter — minor cracking is normal and can be addressed with crack filler before it grows. Recoating every 5–8 years depending on wear keeps the surface looking fresh. We're available for maintenance and resurfacing long after your court is built.
