Why Landscape Lighting Changes How You Use Your Property

A huge portion of the time and money homeowners invest in their outdoor space — patios, gardens, retaining walls, water features — becomes invisible the moment the sun sets, unless there's a thoughtful lighting plan in place. Landscape lighting is what allows a beautiful outdoor living space to actually function for the many hours of the day when it's dark, particularly during Eastern Iowa's long winter evenings when the sun sets well before 5 p.m. for months at a time. Beyond aesthetics, well-designed lighting adds genuine safety value, illuminating steps, walkways, and grade changes that would otherwise be hazards in the dark, and it adds a real security benefit by eliminating the dark zones around a property that create opportunity for unwanted activity.

Landforms Design Inc designs and installs landscape lighting as an integrated part of our outdoor living projects, and as a standalone service for properties that already have hardscape and plantings in place but have never had a proper lighting plan. Since 1995, we've learned that lighting design is genuinely its own discipline — it's not just about pointing a few spotlights at trees, it's about layering light intentionally to create depth, highlight the features that deserve attention, and avoid the harsh, flat look of poorly planned outdoor lighting.

Our Approach to Lighting Design

We design lighting plans around the same principle we apply to every part of a landscape: understanding how you actually use the space. A lighting plan for a family that entertains frequently on their patio looks different from one designed primarily for security and safety, and both differ from a plan built around showcasing a specific garden feature or architectural element of the home. Using our Uvision 3D Landscape Creator software, we can model proposed fixture placement and light levels before installation, which is especially useful for lighting design since it's difficult to visualize how multiple light sources will interact and layer together just from a written plan.

Our lighting designs typically incorporate several distinct techniques, layered together rather than relying on a single approach:

Materials and Technology

We install low-voltage LED landscape lighting systems almost exclusively, for good reason. LED fixtures use a fraction of the energy of older halogen landscape lighting, run cooler (reducing fire risk and bulb-related fixture degradation), and last significantly longer — often 20,000 to 50,000 hours compared to a couple thousand hours for halogen bulbs. Low-voltage systems (typically 12-volt) are also inherently safer to install and maintain outdoors compared to line-voltage systems, and they allow for flexible, expandable wiring runs that make future additions to the lighting plan straightforward. We select fixtures rated for direct burial and full outdoor exposure, with brass or high-grade composite housings that resist the corrosion and UV degradation that cheaper aluminum or plastic fixtures suffer over time.

The Homeowner Process

Lighting projects begin with an evening site visit whenever possible, since seeing your property in the dark reveals exactly what needs illumination and what existing conditions — ambient light from neighboring properties, streetlights, or your home's own exterior fixtures — the new plan needs to work around. We then develop a fixture layout and, for larger projects, a 3D visualization. Installation for a typical residential lighting project takes one to three days depending on the number of fixtures and whether wiring needs to be run underneath existing hardscape or through established planting beds, which requires more careful trenching to avoid root damage.

We typically wire lighting systems to a central transformer with a photocell and timer or smart control, allowing lights to activate automatically at dusk and shut off on a schedule or via smartphone app control, without the homeowner needing to manually manage the system every evening.

Why Iowa Conditions Make This Service Valuable

Cedar Rapids experiences some of the most dramatic seasonal daylight swings in the country — summer evenings that stay light past 9 p.m., contrasted with winter days where darkness falls before many people even finish their workday. This means a well-lit outdoor space delivers value across a huge portion of the year, not just for occasional evening entertaining in summer. Additionally, our winter conditions — snow cover, ice, and freeze-thaw ground movement — make durable, properly installed fixtures and wiring essential. Lighting systems installed with inadequate wire burial depth or fixtures not rated for genuine outdoor exposure often fail or become damaged within a couple of Iowa winters, whereas properly specified low-voltage LED systems are built to handle these conditions for many years.

Professional Installation vs. DIY

DIY landscape lighting kits are widely available and can work reasonably well for very simple applications, like a handful of path lights along a straight walkway. Where DIY lighting typically falls short is in overall design cohesion and technical execution: uneven light levels that create harsh bright spots and dark gaps, fixtures placed without considering how tree growth or seasonal foliage will change the lighting effect over time, undersized transformers that can't handle the full fixture load, and wiring buried too shallow to survive years of lawn maintenance, freeze-thaw heaving, and general yard use. Professional lighting design also brings a trained eye for layering — understanding that good landscape lighting is about creating depth and highlighting select features, not simply making the entire yard uniformly bright.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is landscape lighting expensive to run?

Low-voltage LED landscape lighting is quite economical to operate. LED fixtures use a small fraction of the electricity that older halogen landscape lighting systems required, and with automatic dusk-to-dawn or timer controls, most residential systems add only a modest amount to a monthly electric bill even when running every fixture every evening.

Will landscape lighting survive Iowa winters?

Yes, when properly specified and installed. We use low-voltage LED fixtures rated for full outdoor exposure and direct burial, with wiring buried to a depth that avoids disruption from frost heave and typical lawn maintenance. The main causes of landscape lighting failure in our climate are inadequate fixture quality or shallow wire burial, both of which we account for in every installation.

How many lighting fixtures does a typical yard need?

This varies enormously based on property size, the features you want to highlight, and the overall design goal. Effective lighting design is about strategic placement and layering rather than raw fixture count — a well-designed system with a dozen thoughtfully placed fixtures often looks better and functions better than a poorly planned system with twice as many lights. We determine fixture count and placement during an on-site evening consultation specific to your property.

Can lighting be added to an existing patio or retaining wall?

Yes. While it's most cost-effective to plan lighting conduit into a new hardscape project from the start, we regularly add lighting to existing patios, walls, and gardens. This may involve running wiring along the base of existing structures or through adjacent planting beds, which we do carefully to avoid damaging established plants or hardscape.

How much does landscape lighting cost in Cedar Rapids?

Costs depend on the number of fixtures, the complexity of the wiring layout, transformer capacity needed, and whether smart controls are included. Because every property and design goal is different, we provide a specific estimate after an on-site — ideally evening — consultation rather than generic pricing.
